2006年2月3日13時37分頃，茨城県のはるか沖の深さ26kmを震源とするマグニチュード（Mw）5.7 (防災科研F-netによる）の地震が発生しました。この地震で，宮城・福島・茨城・栃木の各県で震度３を観測したのをはじめ，北海道から愛知県までの広い範囲で有感地震となりました。この地震の後，14時41分頃にMw4.9，15時10分頃にMw5.2の余震が発生しました。 1999年以降に，この地震の近くで発生したMw5.0以上の地震は以下のとおりです。
