General Summary Seismicity Moment Tensors Strong Motion Topics by S-net

  General Summary
An MJMA 7.4 earthquake occurred at 5:59 on November 22 (JST: UTC+0900), 2016, off Fukushima-ken, northeastern Japan.
According to its moment tensor estimated from the NIED F-net data, this earthquake is a shallow normal-faulting event within the overriding land plate along the Tohoku subduction zone. Similar events have occurred as aftershocks of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake (MJMA 9.0).

Visualization of strong motions (left) and tsunamis (right) propagation using S-net data coupled with K-NET and KiK-net data. Strong motions, represented by the real-time seismic intensity, were first detected by S-net and propagated through both sea and land areas. Tsunamis, represented by water pressure changes, propagated from off Fukushima-ken prefecture to the north and south approximately 15 minutes after the earthquake. This work is supported in part by the Council for Science, Technology, and Innovation (CSTI) through the Cross-ministerial Strategic Innovation Promotion Program (SIP), entitled ¡ÈEnhancement of societal resiliency against natural disasters¡É (Funding agency: JST).
