 General Summary
An MJMA7.3 earthquake occurred on April 16, 2016, in Kumamoto prefecture, Southwestern Japan. Hypocenters of this strike-slip mainshock and its aftershocks are widely distributed along the Futagawa and Hinagu active faults. After the occurrence of the mainshock, M4.5-6 earthquakes caused strong ground motions in the Aso region, Kumamoto prefecture and even in Oita prefecture approximately 50-100 km northeast from the mainshock hypocenter.
